Description

Many training opportunities focus on the development of intervention skills for identifying and helping individuals at risk for suicide. As worthwhile as these are, they do not address the problem of suicide at the community level. Developing community based strategies to reduce suicide and its impact requires additional knowledge and skills.

This four day training opportunity, based on the publication by the same name is concerned with mobilizing communities  towards reducing suicidal behaviour and its impact. It is a strengths based approach based on a process referred to as CURE. CURE stands for Community, Understand, Respond and Evaluate. The training encourages participation by a cross section of community representatives from health, education, human services, faith groups, government, human services, first responders volunteers, etc. By the end of training participants will have developed a deeper understanding of community based strategies, challenges in mobilizing communities, designing activities that draw on the strengths of the community rather than focusing on deficits. Participants will also learn a framework for constructing a community based strategy (ies).
